Jackson Ward: A Cultural Hub
Jackson Ward is often referred to as the “Harlem of the South” due to its rich African-American history as well as contributions to the arts. This walkable neighborhood is home to several attractions, such as the Hippodrome Theater, the Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site, and the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia. Every October, Jackson Ward also plays host to 2nd Street Festival, a two-day affair full of live music, food, and community spirit.
Carytown: A Ahopper’s Paradise
Our next stop is Carytown, often dubbed as the “Mile of Style.” This eclectic district is an absolute haven for shopaholics. The streets are lined with various locally owned boutiques, vintage shops, and specialty stores. Some of the local attractions include the Carytown Farmers Market at City Stadium; it’s open every Sunday from May through October. There’s also the legendary Byrd Theatre, which has been delighting moviegoers since 1928.
The Fan District: An Urban Oasis
This walkable neighborhood is named for its unique street grid that resembles a handheld fan—one of the many preferred accessories during the Victorian era. And just so, because the Fan District is also believed to be the largest intact Victorian neighborhood in the country. As you explore the area, you’ll find elegant rowhouses along tree-lined streets, as well as a mix of coffee shops, corner bars, and restaurants.
Shockoe Bottom: History and Nightlife Unite
Next, we head to Shockoe Bottom, one of the oldest neighborhoods of Richmond. Traces of its rich history are everywhere, such as the Richmond Slave Trail, the Richmond African Burial Ground. There are also cultural institutions, including The Poe Museum and Shockoe Artspace. But at night, Shockoe Bottom transforms into a vibrant nightlife hub, with plenty of restaurants, bars, and even craft breweries to quench your thirst. Don’t miss the Richmond Night Market while you’re here.
